![]() Although we suspect there’s still some reused assets in there, perhaps from one of the Mario & Sonic Olympics games, this is actually a fairly involved racing game. In large part because it seems to be entirely original. Oddly, it’s the horse racing which is the most interesting and unique of the five sports. Nobody would ever compare the originals to FIFA or PES, but when you have a full 11-a-side match and can even turn off special moves those comparisons become inevitable – and unflattering.īaseball (which we assume is based on Mario Super Sluggers, which was never released in Europe) is just as bad, as the noble sport of rounders is reduced to mindlessly jabbing the ‘A’ button no matter whether you’re batting or pitching. Rather than feeling like a unique game that uses football as its inspiration it just comes across as a failed attempt to copy the real thing. That may sound good in theory, as many complained that the originals went too far with their extra features, but again it drains all the novelty out of the experience. Not to mention it strips them of most of their charm and personality.įootball is obviously derived from the Super Mario Strikers games, but again removes most of the power-ups and special moves. This is not necessarily a bad thing – we’ve always been against the Mario Kart-ification of what were originally fairly realistic sports sims – but removing the power-ups but not adding in more depth just leaves the games feeling like hollow shells. Of course, feel free to disagree.Oddly, almost all the power-ups and wackier elements of the two games have also been stripped out. It is my game of 2017 I like it just a *teeny* bit more than Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Snipperclips, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's not quite as good as past Mario sports games, but it's a great portable mixup of sports that's fun to play before bed or when you have a bit of free time. Honestly, I tend to stick to Exhibition games, but for those who want a little more, it's there for you to enjoy. Each of them play well, and it's a nice way for me to blow off some steam. I love that Koopa and Paratroopa received yellow and blue skins. We also have Birdo and Diddy Kong, and the teammates are good selections. Now, I know a lot of people are upset that Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach are playable yet again, but I hardly believe they stole anyone's spots. That being said, Mario Sports Superstars does many things right. Granted, it is the new sport here, but it would have been neat if the others got similar treatment and not feel as shallow in comparison. It kind of feels like a basic sports compilation with Mario and friends put into it.Īnother drawback is that it seems that Horse Racing got a bit more love than the other four sports. This is advertised as a Mario Sports package, but there are no Mushroom Kingdom stages or gimmicks. The one *huge* flaw with Mario Sports Superstars is that it feels awfully generic. I will finish up the review by starting with the bad parts. So yeah, Mario Sports Superstars has a nice chunk of modes to enjoy outside of the basic Exhibition games. I'm not much of an online gamer, but I heard that the connection is decently stable and games run properly. ![]() You can unlock accessories for your horse to give them their unique style.įinally, all five sports are playable online. This allows players to tend for their own horse's, complete with walking them and feeding them goodies. Horse Racing includes an optional Stable Mode. Finishing it will be unlock Superstar captains with greatly increased stats. It's essentially a brick-breaker game featuring basic enemies and minibosses. ![]() These take advantage of the special amiibo cards that launched alongside this game. Completing them on all difficulty levels unlocks a certain character.īeyond that, there's a special mode called Road to Superstar (pictured above). There are also practice tutorials that you play each time you begin a new sport. All five sports come with a Tournament Mode, which serves as the means to getting one character and multiple courses. ![]() This game has a fair amount of replayability to it. ![]()
